South Tahoe High track team’s star distance runner Hudson Wilvers continued showing off his best season yet with a first-place finish in the 1,600 meters and third in the 800 at the Northern Nevada 4A League regional meet Saturday at Reno High.

The top five in each event advance to state, meaning Wilvers will compete in both at the state meet Thursday through Saturday in Henderson.

Wilvers finished in first place in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 22.46 seconds, more than two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Stephen Pottey of Galena (4:24.78). Wilvers was third in the 800 at 2:00.2, trailing winner Alan Thomas of Hug (1:56.1) and runner-up James Bailey of Reno (1:59.8).

The STHS boys’ 4×100 relay team of Grant Swinney, Kevin Capellino, Jason Todd and Mikey VanGorden also advanced to state with a third-place finish at 43.82. Only Reno and Hug were better.

“That was huge for us because they went in there in lane 8 without any other school counting them in,” said STHS track coach Melissa Berry. “They had been practicing handoffs all week. That was amazing. I’m super proud of them.”

On the girls’ side, the 4×400 relay team of Heather Neuman, Jackie Marshall, Ellen Gallanty and Karen Dalmacio advanced to state with a fifth-place finish and time of 4:11.63.

“We could have gotten fourth place, but there was a really awkward handoff,” Berry said.

Marshall also finished eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.44.

Overall, the boys’ team landed in the ninth spot with 22 points, while the girls’ team was 13th with five points. Reno won both divisions with 111.5 points for the girls and 145 points for the boys.
