SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — As part of Heavenly Mountain Resort’s spring events, mountain officials and ski patrol staff will host a series of competitions and fundraisers starting on Thursday, March 31.

“There is no better way to celebrate the end of a great winter season than to bring the community together,” resort spokeswoman Rachelle Atherton said of upcoming events.

PRO PATROL RACES

The mountain will host this year’s Tahoe Basin Pro Patrol Race on Thursday, March 31, pitting ski patrollers from area resorts against one another in friendly competition

“It’s about the camaraderie of patrollers,” Atherton said. “I think it’s a really nice showcase of patrollers having fun.”

Races will take place on Heavenly’s World Cup ski run at the California Lodge base area. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with spectator access at the bottom of the run. Awards will be given to fastest male and female skier and snowboarder as well as fastest overall resort team. Patrollers from Heavenly, Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, Kirkwood Mountain, Northstar California, Alpine Meadows, Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak resorts are expected to participate.

17TH ANNUAL PATROL FUNDRAISER

Heavenly ski patrol will host their annual Patrol Fundraiser Party on Saturday, April 2, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

“It’s a very casual and laid-back event for a good cause,” Atherton said.

The party raises funds for the Heavenly Ski Patrol Fund, which supports numerous local organizations like Live Violence Free, Bread and Broth, St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Special Olympics Team Tahoe.

Last year’s event raised $17,400 for local charities.

“We really want to give back to the community,” Atherton said, describing the emphasis on donating to local groups.

Doors open at 7 p.m. This year’s party will feature a circus theme with carnival games, live music, clowns and a balloon animal artist. Heavenly officials said they also plan to shave one of their avalanche dogs to look like a lion. Food and beer will be provided by Base Camp Pizza, Sierra Nevada, KCCO and Lagunitas. Entry includes a suggested donation of at least $5 with season pass raffle tickets.

GUNBARREL 25

The annual Gunbarrel 25 endurance race will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 2. The competition features a challenging 25 laps on Heavenly’s Gunbarrel moguls and is open to the public. The cost is $50 for pass holders and $115 for non-pass holders. The non-pass holder fee includes lift access.

SPECIAL NEEDS SKATE NIGHT

Heavenly will host its annual Special Needs Skate Night from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 15.

“It’s about getting special-needs kids out with patrol staff,” Atherton said.

The event pairs special-needs children with patrollers pushing adaptive hockey sleds.

The free ice skating party will once again be held at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.
