St. Gall inaugurates scrip program

Members of St. Gall Catholic Church have put together a scrip program to help raise funds for the pastoral center which is due to break ground this spring.

The pastoral center will be a place to host community events and will house classrooms for religious education classes and other youth services.

Scrip is a program whereby gift certificates are purchased for future use, and a percentage of the gift certificate is donated by the retail store to the organization that handles the scrip, in this case, St. Gall church. The gift certificates come in a variety of denominations, from $5-$100, depending on the retailer.

Everything, from Arco gas pump pass cards to food at Raley’s and Smith’s, shoes at Payless Shoe Source, clothes at major department stores, supplies at stores such as Costco, K-Mart and Home Depot, can be purchased through this scrip program. Toys can be purchased through the program at Toys ‘R Us and sporting goods at Big 5. Macy’s, Gottschalks and J.C. Penney allow their charge cards to be paid using scrip.

Fast food outlets, such as KFC and Burger King, accept scrip, as do restaurants such as Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Chili’s and Denny’s. Many additional retailers are participating.

To date, the scrip program has raised $2,149 for the pastoral center building fund, and it hasn’t cost the parishioners a dime, because it was money they were spending anyway. Those using the program are amazed at the ease of their shopping experiences when using scrip. They simply calculate their weekly food budget, for example, pre-purchase the scrip and use it the same as cash at the checkstand.

Volunteers at St. Gall have made the purchase easy. A list of the retailers involved in the program is available at the church office. Scrip can be purchased weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the church office at 1343 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville, and after all weekend services. Saturday’s services are at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday’s are at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

All residents of the Carson Valley are asked to consider helping their friends and neighbors at St. Gall build the new St. Gall pastoral center by purchasing scrip.
