The National Football League kicked off its 2016 season Thursday, Sept. 8, with a Super Bowl rematch between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Three days later, professional football will be in full swing — and with it, an influx in sports betting.

Pro football is one of the most popular sports to bet, and Stateline offers a variety of locales — and manners — in which to place a pigskin-related wager. The South Shore sports books at Lakeside Inn and Casino, MontBleu, Harrah’s, Harveys and Hard Rock are all good places for those that want to see their bet in action on the gridiron.

For traditional bettors, wagers can be made on the outcome of a single game with a point spread or money line bet. Those looking for better odds can tie multiple games together for a parlay — the more teams involved, the better the payout.

The long-term bets start with championship futures, an odds-based wager where bettors predict who will hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February. According to William Hill — who operates the sports books at Hard Rock and MontBleu — the Panthers are favorites at 7 to 1, with the New England Patriots just behind at 8 to 1.

Super Bowl favorites with 10 to 1 odds include the Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers; the defending champion Broncos are at 15 to 1 odds. The biggest underdog is the Cleveland Browns, at 200 to 1 odds to win the title.

William Hill provides the greatest variety in which to place a football bet, including weekly and season-long prop bets. The most passing, rushing and receiving yards can all be bet on, with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, and running backs Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings) and Todd Gurley (Los Angeles Rams) possessing the best odds in each category.

Head-to-head regular season props include Peterson or Gurley for more rushing yards, Brees or Indianapolis Colts’ signal caller Andrew Luck for the most passing yards, and Brown or Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones for more receiving yards. There are also prop bets involving 500-yard passing games, longest touchdown of the season and whether a team will win — or lose — 14 or more games.

William Hill also offers its Pro Pick’em contest, which is $25 to enter and offers $300,000 in cash prizes. For all 17 weeks of the season, players pick the winner of Sunday and Monday games.

In the contest, there is a $10,000 weekly cash prize for the most winners, and a $20,000 grand prize for the player with the most wins at the end of the season. The deadline to enter the Pro Pick’em contest is Sunday, Sept. 11, at 8 a.m. It lasts through the conclusion of the NFL regular season on Jan. 1.
