Stevens date pushed back

Gregory Crofton

A man linked to burglaries at 18 South Lake Tahoe businesses and six in Nevada had his court date pushed back for a second time because a defense attorney said he still needs more time to work toward a plea agreement.

David Stevens, a 41-year-old transient, was allegedly caught stealing from Ernie’s Coffee Shop in May after he tripped a silent alarm. He is charged with 18 counts involving burglary, possession of stolen property and trespass.

“Discussions are continuing. We may settle we may not,” said El Dorado County Assistant District Attorney Hans Uthe.

In all of the crimes, a thief opened registers and stole whatever cash was available. In at least two businesses, a burglar dug and kicked his way through Sheetrock walls to enter neighboring stores.

In the spring of 2000, Stevens was released from San Quentin State Prison after serving time for commercial burglary. Since his release he has become a suspect in at least 12 church burglaries in the Bay area as well as burglaries committed at South Shore.

He is expected in El Dorado County Superior Court on July 26 at 8 a.m.
