STHS girls’ routed by Galena

RENO, Nev. – The Lady Vikings took on Galena Saturday at Reno High in their final game of the High Sierra Winter Classic. Galena set the tone early, grabbing a 20-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Vikings struggled to get into an offensive rhythm, and gave up numerous second chance buckets en route to a 60-25 loss. Brooke King led the scoring with 8 points, Bailey David 6, Kaila Griffis, 5, Karley Martinez, 4, and Alisa Caro 2.

“We learned a lot by coming here and playing three 4A schools this weekend,” said head coach Mike Neiger. “We had a shot at winning against Hug, being down 2 midway through the fouth quarter, and only trailed Damonte Ranch by 7 at halftime. This young team is still getting to know each other and to be in the first two games should give them some confidence moving forward. We gave up way too many easy put-back baskets simply by not boxing out our opponents. The girls forced a lot of passes in traffic and attempted far too many cross-court passes on our press break.

“This was a good experience for these kids. They didn’t back down and battled hard in their three games. When they ran the offense, they created a lot of open shots. It also exposed some weaknesses, and we will regroup Monday and get to work.”
