One more win and the South Tahoe High girls’ tennis team would have made school history last year by advancing to the state tournament.

South Tahoe routed Truckee to qualify for the region semifinals before Reno denied the Vikings a place in school history. That near milestone hasn’t been lost on the Vikings’ returning players and their second-year coach Jenny Clark.

“We have our goal set for state,” Clark said. “We will concentrate on one match at a time. We look forward to seeing the community come out and not only support our girls and boys but to see some of the best tennis in the state.”

Two of the team’s top singles players graduated, but the Vikings remain loaded in that department. Junior Rebecca Roberts, the younger sister of Sacramento State player Jimmy Roberts, won a first-round match at regionals last year and is only a junior.

Lindsey Buchanan-Martin, a senior, has been both a singles and doubles player during her career at STHS. Last year, she paired with Savannah Cherry to finish second in the regional tournament and became only the second girls’ doubles team from the school in the past 10 years to advance to the state tournament. She returns to singles this season.

Freshman Cassandra Marin will fill the third singles spot, giving Clark a trio of players who she is excited about.

“We have more depth this year compared to last year, and our singles team is awesome,”Clark said.

Experience and a sister duo should enable the Vikings’ doubles teams to deliver their share of points.

According to Clark, Amanda and Emily Rives will be a dynamic sister doubles pair, while the teams of Krisha Penollar and Lupe Ramirez and Shannon Piazzo and Angel Aquino provide veteran experience for the Vikings. Penollar and Ramirez are a third-year team, and Piazzo and Aquino have two years’ experience.

Doubles depth will be provided by sophomores Kelsey Metzger, Casey Willitts, Rosalie Annand, Rachel Altman and Tina Tu. Newcomers Sage Wescott and Rachel Caglia are welcomed additions to the team.

“Anxiously awaiting will be the sophomores who have been working hard all summer,” Clark said.

If all goes according to plan, the Vikings will be hoisting a state trophy in October.
