STHS Nordic skiers thrive on Olympic trails

South Tahoe High Nordic skiers produced five top-10 finishes at the West Shore Legacy Races on Friday at Sugar Pine Point State Park in Tahoma.
South Tahoe High girls dominated the California/Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation open division, putting three finishers in the top 10. For the second straight race, Lisa Johnston was the winner, completing the course in 31 minutes, 40.9 seconds. Teammate Tiffany Racz was fifth in 34:19.6 and Kaylee Kalinowski took 10th in 36:08.9.
“They are doing very well,” said STHS coach Scott Hudson. “It was a good race on Olympics trails, and I’m pretty pleased with the progress for a fairly young team.”
The Vikings put four more finishers in the top 20: Janelle Spandau was 13th (38:38.5), Madeline Dant 14th (39:20.9), Kate Carlson 16th (39:51.7) and Christy Walowit 19th (41:19.4).
South Tahoe sophomore Cassidy Cichowicz finished in the top half of the varsity girls’ field, placing sixth in 27:21.6. Truckee’s Anika Taylor was first in 25:03.2.
Senior David Wise, the STHS boys’ only varsity race participant, placed 10th in 25:08.2. Truckee’s Russell Kennedy was first in 21:46.9.

“David and Cassidy are skiing with some pretty good skiers,” Hudson said. “David is holding his own, and Cassidy, she just took off. With her competitiveness and work ethic, she’s doing really well.”
Hudson said both of his top skiers are trying to qualify for the Junior Olympics.
In the open boys’ division, South Tahoe packed three consecutive finishers from 11th through 13th places. Erik Cramer was 11th in 29:16.6, Tyler Meyers was 12th in 29:39.1, Justin Dalton was 13th in 30:39.2, Kyle Wilkinson finished 15th in 33:01.1 and Leighton Cook placed 19th in 42:54.3.
For South Tahoe Middle School, Grace Bronken was 29th in 14:33.9, Tatum Whatford placed 30th in 14:35.2, Zaira Monette came in 34th in 14:52.4, Mikela Mangiarcina was 35th in 14:58.5, Kerry Norton took 38th in 15:28.6, Molly Dant was 41st in 15:48.5, Rebecca Novak was 42nd in 15:49.5, Ally Swain was 53rd in 16:54, Emma Sower was 55th in 16:57.9, Lauren Taylor was 59th in 18:07.9 and Morgan Alexandra was 64th in 18:38.6.
Harley Norton led the South Tahoe boys, finishing 15th in 12:03.5, then came Kyle Swain in 33rd (13:25.8), Paul Hoefer in 35th (13:40.7), Chas Carlson in 43rd (14:15.8), Jack Suglian in 45th (14:33.6), Goody Walowit in 50th (15:00.1), Brady McIntyre in 51st (15:07.6), Caleb Russell in 54th (15:32.1), Mario Dixon in 60th (1700.5), Joe Albrecht in 70th (19:44.3) and Scotty Carlson in 71st.
