STMS 8th-grader arrested for bomb threat

A day after a bomb threat emptied South Tahoe Middle School, students already had information on a suspect.

South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Pete VanArnum arrested an eighth-grade student Tuesday, who was on suspension when the threat was called into the school’s office. The boy was suspended for excessive detentions and defiance, VanArnum said.

Superintendent Rich Alexander said teachers talked with students about Monday’s incident, encouraging them to come forward with information.

“It was a very smooth day and the teachers did a great job of debriefing the students,” Alexander said.

Investigators said students informed teachers and VanArnum that the eighth-grade boy bragged about making the bomb threat. Alexander said the school will also be conducting its own investigation.

“If it is determined that the student is guilty then I will make a recommendation for expulsion,” he said.

VanArnum said the case will be referred to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s office for prosecution. Making a false report of a bomb carries a penalty of 16 months to three years in prison.

Students were evacuated around 1:30 p.m. Monday, during their last class. They were forced to leave their belongings and some who were interrupted during gym class had to go home in their shorts and T-shirts. Police searched the entire building.
