Stolen car found burned in the lake

A stolen convertible was burned and found half-submerged Friday morning next to the El Dorado Beach boat dock.

South Lake Tahoe Police Detective Brian Williams said it appeared that the interior of the car was doused with gasoline and then set on fire after the car was in the water. Fire damage was also found on the dock area. A gasoline can was found inside the vehicle.

The car, a white Mitsubishi Spyder Eclipse, was stolen sometime after 11 p.m. Thursday night from Glenwood Avenue near Pioneer Trail. One of the hot air balloon companies saw the car Friday morning around 9 a.m. as they were floating over the lake and called the city’s parks and recreation department, who then called the police.

A temporary floating barrier was placed around the car to contain the debris and any possible contamination. Bruce Warden, an environmental specialist for Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, sampled the water for testing.

“We have no way of knowing how significant the pollution is until we get our lab results back,” Warden said. “It doesn’t take much gasoline to cause a significant amount of gasoline contamination.”

Warden said if the tests show a significant amount of pollution Lahontan might consider pursuing action against the arsonists.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact Detective Williams at (530) 542-6100.
