Street luger seriously injured

A extreme ride down old Meyers Grade turned wrong Tuesday when a 37-year-old road luger ran into the back of a parked car.

Benjamin Ancheta and a friend parked at the bottom of the mostly unused road and hiked up with their luges around 7 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol officers. Street luging, one of the many popular extreme sports found at the X-games, closely resembles its winter counterpart. Participants use a device that resembles an elongated skateboard. The board is controlled by pegs at the end of the board that lugers push with their feet to make gradual turns. Their braking system is also their feet.

Ancheta was in the lead as the pair approached the closure gates. His friend, whose name was not available, was videotaping the trip with a recorder attached to his helmet, police said. A driver of a pickup truck was making a u-turn in front of the gate when she noticed Ancheta and stopped. Police said Ancheta went through the gate and under the pickup truck before crashing into the back of his friend’s car parked on the side of the road.

Ancheta’s body went under the car up to his neck. He was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Washoe Medical Center with major injuries. On Wednesday afternoon, he was listed in serious but stable condition.
