Students are on their way
Two fifth-grade students at Sierra House Elementary School received the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra “On Your Way” award for January 2002. They are Aaron Fuente and Chris Benavidez.
Aaron, a student in Ms. Riley’s class, likes to read any kind of books about animals. About reading he said, “It’s fun. I like to answer questions about what I read.”
Riley said, “Aaron deserves the On Your Way award because he has overcome many reading challenges. He understands what he is reading. He can now read to gather information and read for pleasure.”
Chris’ favorite book is “Hatchet” and he likes reading books about dinosaurs. He said, “I like reading time because it is a quiet, peaceful activity.”
His teacher Ms. Nighswonger said, “Chris deserves this award because he is showing improvement in reading skills and in his attitude toward reading. His reading improvement has also helped his spelling grades.”
The On Your Way award is presented each month to elementary students who have worked very hard to improve his or her reading skills. Promoting literacy in youth in one of the missions of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra. Each recipient is awarded a certificate, a $25 gift certificate for a local bookstore and a special presentation at their school.
