Each year the California Music Educators Association and California Band Directors Association offer regional and all-state honor group opportunities for young musicians. This opportunity comes with a very specific and challenging list of audition material. Only those musicians who are highly motivated and dedicated enough to devote hours of their own time to learn the repertoire and make the required recording are considered for these prestigious events.

This year the Northern California Band Directors Association held its event Feb. 1-3 at California State University, Chico. Six musicians from South Tahoe High School auditioned for the group and five were selected. The participants were Troy Mikanovich, selected for his fourth year in a row, Earl Peck, Greg Gaskin, Kyle Conroy and Rand Norberg. They met with 85 other selected Northern California high school musicians and were directed by guest conductor, Dr. Ken Ayoob of California State University, Humboldt.

The concert music was contemporary in nature and extremely challenging. Following the fabulous performance came additional recognition for Kyle and Rand in the form of music camp scholarships. Troy received the Dan Heistand Memorial Award in the form of a $300 college scholarship.

This year’s CBDA All-State Honor Bands were held Feb. 16-19 in Fresno, where 300 students, selected from 1,000, came together from the north and south to form three bands culminating in a performance of the highest quality. The students selected to perform in this year’s All-State are Troy Mikanovich, again for the fourth year, Rand Norberg and Kyle Conroy. South Tahoe Middle School students Melissa Ewing and Chris Garrett were selected for the All-State Middle School Band.

“We are extremely proud of all our musicians, but these young people deserve our highest praise and congratulation for their extra efforts and achievements,” said JJ Clause, Lake Tahoe Unified School District music instructor.

Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe held their annual instrumental music competition in February at Harveys. Each year top musicians from South Tahoe High School are invited to perform an eight-minute solo in front of judges.

This year’s winners were Troy Mikanovich, senior, tuba, first place, $200; Rand Norberg, freshman, trombone, second place, $100; Kyle Conroy, junior, trombone and Bubba Romagnolo, junior, piano tied for third-place, $50; and Faye Marie Pekar, junior, violin, $25.
