Summer Barbecue at Glen Alpine

A Glen Alpine Springs Summer Barbecue will provide an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Glen Alpine, learn the area’s history and help support the Historic Preservation of Glen Alpine Springs.

The event is scheduled from noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 25. It is open to everyone and will include tours of the historic site first discovered by Nathan Gilmore in 1863, live music and a hamburger and hot dog barbecue along with other good things to eat. Mt. Tallac Brewing Co. will offer $2 pints.

The cost is a $10 donation to benefit the Historic Preservation of Glen Alpine Springs. Children under 12 years of age and dogs are free. No cats allowed for their own safety.

Glen Alpine Springs officially became a resort in 1884. One of the finest Lake Tahoe area resorts in the late 1890s and popular into 1910, Glen Alpine boasted not only a hotel and numerous tent cabins, but also fine dining on linen tablecloths and china in a formal dining room. Buildings designed by the famous architect Bernard Maybeck’s may be seen on the tour.

To reach Glen Alpine Springs take Fallen Leaf Lake Road off State Route 89 to the Lily Lake parking area and hike one mile to Glen Alpine. The trail continues into the Desolation Valley Wilderness.

The goal of The Historical Preservation of Glen Alpine Springs, Inc., is to reclaim and maintain the grounds and buildings and provide a place of learning, retreat and beauty.
