Sunset regional tourney postponed until after hearing

Staff report

Western High School in Las Vegas is challenging an Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association ruling that penalized the Warriors boys’ basketball program for having an ineligible player being on its roster.

A hearing has been set for Thursday at 1:30 p.m., postponing the Sunset League regional tournament.

The alleged infraction led to the forfeiture of games, dropping Western from second to fifth place in the Sunset League and out of this week’s regional tournament

“This hearing is scheduled on the heels of a District Court judge in Las Vegas dismissing the complain (on Tuesday),” said Eddie Bonine, NIAA executive director in a letter to the media released on Wednesday afternoon. “The above mentioned date and time for the hearing is in direct conflict with the present tournament format scheduled to begin tonight.”

Bonine said that depending on the outcome of Thursday’s hearing, different seeding and particpant possibilities exist for the regional tournament.
