Supervisors send charter amendments to voters

Greg Risling

The last of the charter amendments was approved by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

There is one remaining recommendation regarding the county’s ability to hire outside contractors that was deferred to March 10. The county must file the proposed amendments to the Elections Department by Friday, March 6, for the June ballot. Voters will decide whether the amendments should become part of the charter, considered the local version of a constitution.

The four amendments slated for the June election include:

— Changing language to “adopt a uniform format that, as a minimum, shall provide for responses to findings and recommendations of reports of the grand jury” pursuant to the state’s penal code.

— Adding a section that requires a wide distribution of the grand jury’s final report.

— Refining a section that deals with voters’ approval of all benefit assessments.

— Members of all boards and commissions would serve at the will of the board unless otherwise stated by state or federal law.

If the amendment dealing with contracting out isn’t resolved by March 6 it will be bumped back to the November election.
