Suspect trying to get attorney

George James Bariames appeared at Douglas County District Court for a Wednesday arraignment after suffering a seizure the day before at Tahoe Township Court.

He was alert and said his father is in the midst of hiring an attorney. The next court date won’t be determined until the father chooses an attorney, either from private practice or one who works with the court, said Deputy District Attorney Dina Salvucci.

During the short 8:30 a.m. hearing, Bariames was shackled and dressed in jail blue attire. He completed a form letting him know of his rights.

Bariames was arrested Saturday for child abuse and neglect when his wife was found dead on the living room floor with their 10-month-old son next to her, neglected and malnourished.

Nicholas, the 10-month-old, is improving in health. Debbie, Bariames’ wife and mother to Nicholas, had been dead for several days. An autopsy couldn’t determine cause of death and authorities are awaiting toxicology and other test results to determine why she died.

Bariames faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if found guilty on the charges of child abuse and neglect. He is being held in Douglas County Jail.
