Suspicious fires may be related

Two South Lake Tahoe fires that appear to have been deliberately set within an hour of each other are under investigation by authorities.
The first fire was reported at 11:33 p.m. Friday at an apartment complex at 2012 10th St. The second fire was reported 12:45 a.m. Saturday at Bill’s Appliance and Video, 1950 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
No injuries were reported and both fires were quickly extinguished, said John Lilygren, battalion chief for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department. Damage from both fires is estimated at $1,200.
The first fire was intentionally started on a piece of furniture that leaned against the apartment building. Flames spread up the side of the building, knocking out a gas meter and subsequently causing a gas leak, Lilygren said.
All six families occupying the apartment building were evacuated for about an hour, Lilygren said.
While returning to the station from the first fire, fire personnel noticed smoke coming from a storage shed in back of Bill’s Appliance and Video.

Officials believe the fires may be related.
“Both fires are suspicious in nature and may be related. Because of that we’ve turned it over to the police,” Lilygren said.
