Taco night benefits Tahoe Turning Point

Tahoe Turning Point is sponsoring a Taco Dinner Buffet from 6 to 8 p.m. May 20 at Chevy’s Fresh Mex restaurant. Tickets are $5 for all-you-can eat tacos. Beverages are not included. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling (530) 577-1722 and also will be available at the door. In addition, raffle tickets will be sold at the event for prizes donated by local merchants.

Proceeds from the event will benefit six adolescent boys who are trying to raise money for a summer program. Tahoe Turning Point is a privately owned, nonprofit group home licensed by the state of California as a certified Drug and Alcohol Treatment Program to provide services to young people from Northern California and Nevada. Most of the young men admitted to the program come from broken and/or abusive homes, and for one reason or another they have become entangled in the juvenile court system.

The Wilderness Adventure and Winter Snowboard programs promote positive change by providing therapeutic and academic learning experiences, positive relationships with adult role models and peer group interactions. During winter the boys use snowboarding as a way to develop a “yes I can” attitude by initially learning to ride and continually setting daily technical goals along with their personal growth goals. In the spring and summer months they incorporate white water rafting down the American River, rock climbing at Lover’s Leap or reaching the summit of Mt. Whitney. Tahoe Turning Point is continually helping the young men learn how to care for themselves and each other in a clean and sober living environment.

Tahoe Turning Point also is committed to preserving and restoring wilderness areas and communities. The program continues to do various service projects with organizations such as the Forest Service and involves the guys in all sorts of community volunteer work.

Unfortunately, the money Tahoe Turning Point receives from the state is limited to daily living expenses and does not budget for outdoor gear. It is only because of the generosity of companies that they are able to offer these life changing experiences. They are looking for items or gift certificates to raffle off during the Taco Buffet Dinner at Chevy’s. Donated items are tax deductible.

For tickets, to make a donation for the raffle and for more information call (530) 577-1722.
