Tahoe athletes come up golden ahead of Sochi

Staff and USSA report

A few Tahoe-area Olympians tuned up for the Sochi Games with gold-medal performances in the Winter X Games over the weekend.

Truckee’s Danny Davis took gold in the men’s snowboard halfpipe event. Northstar-sponsored freeskier David Wise of Reno and Maddie Bowman of South Lake Tahoe earned X Games gold in the halfpipe skiing final, just a few weeks before the discipline’s Olympic debut.

The victory marked Wise’s third straight gold medal at the X Games. Bowman has now won two straight.

France’s halfpipe hero Kevin Rolland took silver in the men’s final while Alex Ferreira of Aspen stomped his third and final run to earn bronze, his first X Games medal.

“The field was super strong,” Wise said. “I can’t say enough good things about pipe skiing right now; it was amazing.”

Canadian Roz Groenewoud and France’s Marie Martinod took silver and bronze, respectively, in the women’s final. Olympian Brita Sigourney of Carmel, Calif., who grew up skiing at Alpine Meadows and is a former freeskiing coach at Squaw Valley, finished fifth.

“The biggest thing about this group of girls is that we’re just friends,” Bowman said. “We travel together, we ski together all the time and there’s such good camaraderie. I’m so excited to go to Russia with them and we’re going to have a great time.”

The Olympic halfpipe skiing debut is scheduled for Feb. 18 for the men and Feb. 20 for the women at Russia’s Rosa Khutor Extreme Park.
