Tahoe athletes compete at USASA championship
The USASA National Championships began this week in Copper Mtn. Colorado. More than 1600 competitors qualified from 32 regions to participate in this event with more than 20 qualifying from the South Shore region.
Saturday’s practice day and opening ceremonies were the warmest that nationals has ever seen in Colorado, then competitions began on Sunday as the weather also made its presence. Visibility was so poor at times the half pipe competition had to go on several delays while competitors waited for their turn to show off their best tricks and for the weather to pass. Slope style was rescheduled for the boys 8-9 year old division due to poor visibility and judges not being able to see the features. The remainder of disciplines continued for the day. Monday brought with it some sun and single digit temperatures as all competitions resumed.
Top results for the first two days went to Boarder X competitors Nancy Ng (Legend Women) who walked away with gold as her team mate Gabriela Voskerician took 3rd place. Zennon Chatwin (Boys 8-9) made it through quarter finals, semis and into finals. The competition was steep and he went home with a 4th place. Taylor Chatwin (Girls 14-15) and Alexandra Morris (Girls 16-17) both displayed a variety of tricks in slope style and both earned a silver medal. Nancy Ng and Gabriela Voskerician (Legend Women) both had a good day in slope style as well and received gold and silver respectively. Travis Chatwin also displayed his speed in Slalom and took 3rd.
Other south Shore results went to Slalom racers: Denver Orr (Boys 10-11) 14th and Dustin Orr (Boys 12-13) 37th. Giant Slalom Racers: Matthew Jones (Boys 14-15) 45th, Marco Gooding (Boys 16-17) 19th and Dylan Staples (Boys 16-17) 13th.
