Tahoe comedy scene with Howie Nave: Amir K performs at The Improv; clean comedy at Carson Nugget
Special to Lake Tahoe Action
Fresh from his recent performance at the prestigious Montreal’s Just for Laugh Comedy Festival, comedian Amir K — a personal fav — returns to the Lake.
Let’s see, going off memory here he’s on the prime time CW reboot of MADtv, Comedy Central, NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and MTV’s “Jerks with Cameras.” He won a SAG award for his role in the Oscar winning film “Argo” and starred in The FOX feature film “The Pyramid” opposite Denis O’Hare and Ashley Grace.
Amir is one of those comedians who middled when he first came up here, and everyone knew almost immediately should be headlining.
He wasn’t destined for a career in comedy, though. He was in real estate for awhile and doing very good. In fact, he had his own real estate company. But then the Great Recession hit, providing a good opportunity for Amir to exit real estate and follow what would be his true passion of entertaining people and making them laugh.
Born Amir Kamyab in Tehran, Iran and raised in Southern California, Amir spent countless stage time perfecting his craft while gaining a formidable reputation with his storytelling and improvisational style and with his multi-cultural upbringing (being fluent in Farsi and Spanish). He became known for his incredible accents and impressions.
In relatively short amount of time Amir won OC’s Funniest Stand-Up Comedy Competition and was a performer on the CBS “Diversity Showcase.” Following that he was a finalist on NBC’s “Stand-Up for Diversity Showcase” and won Tommy T’s Stand-Up Comedy Competition over in the Bay Area, in addition to winning the 100 comic Ultimate Laff-Down Stand-Up Comedy Competition in Southern California. Now here he is headlining The Improv.
The Improv at Harveys takes place Wednesdays through Sundays at 9 p.m. Learn more at http://www.harveystahoe.com.
Comedy at the Carson Nugget
Have you ever gone to a comedy show with someone on a date, or even your folks, just hoping the language wouldn’t be so embarrassing that it ruins the evening for you? Well, you can avoid the anxiety by heading over to the Carson Nugget Comedy Show to check out the Clean Comedy Challenge happening Aug. 9, 10 and 11.
Comedians from all over the country will be participating. Some of my favorites include Geechy Guy, Leslie Norris Townsend and the Queen of Gardnerville herself, Kat Simmons.
And if that wasn’t good enough, San Francisco Bay Area comedian Sandy Stec headlines Aug. 24 and 25. Please note that all shows are 21 and older and that comedians are subject to change.
Speaking of the Carson Nugget, they shot a television pilot earlier this week where a lot of locals became extras. The working title is “Casino Boss” with its main star being former Saturday Night Live comedian Joe Piscopo. A Tuesday regular on my morning radio show, comedian Bob Zany has a nice role in the project and wouldn’t you now it I got the small part of playing a heckler with Bob’s character performing in the Nugget’s Comedy Club.
I hope I make the cut (so to speak). Other cast members include Grammy nominated singer, songwriter and award-winning filmmaker, Linda Chorney and Kabir Singh. Stay tuned.
