Just as early season snowfall has also allowed Lake Tahoe’s numerous downhill ski resorts to open more terrain, many of the region’s cross-country resorts are up and running and expanding terrain as conditions allow.

Royal Gorge, Tahoe Donner Cross Country, Auburn Ski Club Training Center and Kirkwood Cross Country Center are each open for cross-country for the 2014-2015 ski season.

Royal Gorge, at Lake Tahoe’s North Shore, is operating 43 km of trails across 31 groomed tracks, according to a Wednesday trail report.

The Auburn Ski Club Training Center, also at the North Shore, is offering about 12 km of groomed trails.

Tahoe Donner Cross Country, in Truckee, opened Dec. 20 and is offering 30 km of groomed trails.

Kirkwood Cross Country Center, south of Lake Tahoe, is operating 30 km of groomed trails in the area’s meadow and up to Coyote Pass.

Although snow cover is thin, Tahoe XC in Tahoe city is offering rentals, suggesting people can hike and then ski or head up to nearby Page Meadows or Mount Rose.

The Cross Country, Telemark and Snowshoe Center at Northstar California opened Dec. 19 with 2 km of snowshoe trails. Cross-country skiing is not yet open at Northstar, although Telemark skiing is available.

Hope Valley Outdoors, located at the intersection of State Route 88 and State Route 89 at Pickett’s Junction south of Lake Tahoe, expects to open its yurt soon.
