Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days set for Sunday

South Shore residents will have a chance to give back to the environment at the Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days, Sept. 10 and 24.

The third annual event, headed by the League to Save Lake Tahoe, provides forest education to the community through hands-on restoration projects.

“By being actively involved in restoration efforts, participants learn firsthand about the dynamics of forest ecosystems and the direct connection that exists between healthy forests in the Tahoe Basin and the health of Lake Tahoe,” said Rich Kentz, event coordinator. “We have an incredible resource in our public lands here and because everyone owns it, we have a responsibility to look after it, for our generation and for future generations.”

Volunteers will participate in projects that include forest-, meadow-, stream- and water-quality restoration. More than 600 people have taken part in such projects since the event’s inception in 1998.

“The educational value of the restoration activities are complemented with a series of educational field stations where local experts lead forums to further discuss a particular topic about forest ecology,” Kentz said in a written release.

Education station topics are: forest ecology, fire ecology, the Washoe culture, watersheds, soil conservation and wildlife biology.

There will be activities to match all age levels and physical abilities. No experience is necessary to participate and all volunteers will receive a commemorative event T-shirt.
