Tahoe Parents Nursery School is holding open house today
In 1958, 10 local moms raised money for rent, completed nonprofit status paperwork, met the state’s education requirements, and enrolled 26 children for the first Tahoe Parents Nursery School class. Forty-eight years later, parent involvement and a “can do” attitude are still alive and well at Tahoe Parents Nursery School.
TPNS is a parent participation preschool designed to enhance students’ physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills. Parent education is an equally important part of the program, with parents earning Early Childhood Education credit through Lake Tahoe Community College.
TPNS children learn in a relaxed environment that emphasizes cooperation, sharing and forming friendships. The students have the time and space to grow surrounded by caring adults. Parents spend one day each week in the classroom. The hands-on curriculum offers language, literature, motor skills, music, science, art and cooking.
TPNS reaches out to professional and experts in the local community to teach portions of the child and adult education programs. Also, TPNS takes field trips including the fire station, library, supermarket, radio station, Heavenly gondola, the dentist and the stream profile chamber, to name a few.
Tahoe Parents Nursery School sends well-prepared students to the school district, as well as committed and skilled parents. Over the years TPNS parents have gone on to run many of our local P.T.A.’s and P.T.O.’s. Current school board president, Wendy David, is a past TPNS parent and director. TPNS alumni remain involved in giving back to the community as well: They are the coaches, teacher aides and booster club presidents. Many former students return to TPNS with their own children.
Tahoe Parents Nursery School has embraced the philosophy of “Together We’re Better” for 48 years and would like to invite families to become part of this tradition. TPNS is holding its annual open house for parents and children entering preschool this fall. The open house is scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the TPNS school on the Al Tahoe Elementary School campus, 1100 Lyons Blvd. Come and meet teachers, students and parents and apply for the 2006-2007 school year.
