Tahoe Stars cheer team to hold tryouts

Provided to the Tribune

Tahoe Gymnastics will conduct tryouts to join the Tahoe Stars competitive all-star cheerleading team Sept. 22 and 23. Competitive cheerleading combines three sports into one: hip hop dance, gymnastic tumbling and cheerleading stunting.

The try-outs will be in a clinic form with the participants working on motions, jumps, tumbling, dance and stunting for a couple of hours on both days. This format will allow students to show the coaches their current skill as well as potential and ability to learn.

Tahoe Gymnastics is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated athletes who enjoy the sport of cheerleading. Dance, cheer and/or gymnastics experience is recommended. Anyone between the ages of 9 and 18 is encouraged to try out for the senior team. Some exceptions will be made for younger (under 9) athletes of extreme skill and dedication.

Tahoe Gymnastics also offers recreational cheer classes for those who want to do cheerleading for fun or to improve their skills. Classes for 5 to 8 years old are from 4 to 5 p.m. and students 9 and older meet from 5 to 6 p.m. on Fridays.

Tuition for recreational cheer classes is $100 for the eight week session. The first class will be this Friday. Free open-gym time is included with enrollment.

Andy Miller, former head cheerleading coach at Brigham Young University – Hawaii has joined the staff as head cheer coach for the senior team.
