Tahoe students named to honor band
February 10, 2003
Research proves that music education enhances brain functions, improves reading and math performance, raises test scores, builds teamwork, enhances cooperation and commitment and, thus, helps prepare children for the future.
Thanks to the support of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, quality music education instruction in the area of instrumental music can be provided to students in grades four through 12. The South Tahoe Middle School music program is under the direction of Linda Kurek.
This year 14 STMS music education students had the opportunity to enrich their music education by participating in regional honor bands. Honor Band is an opportunity made possible by the California Music Educators Association and the California Band Directors Association. Lake Tahoe Unified School District is eligible to participate in both the Northern and Capitol Section regions of these organizations. Each year middle school students who are looking for an additional challenge on their instrument and are willing to put forth the extra hours necessary to practice the audition material can make an audio tape and submit it for regional honor band group competition. Regional music teachers critique the submitted tapes and select only the best students based on the musical abilities displayed on the tape. It is an honor and a privilege to participate in these groups.
It is obvious that STMS students are both dedicated and talented. This year’s Capitol Section Middle School Honor Band was made up of 82 students from 34 Sacramento area schools. Twelve members of that band, or about 15 percent, were from STMS. The event took place Jan. 11 at Sheldon High School in Elk Grove, Calif. The Northern California Jr. High Honor Band represented 50 schools in a 116-piece band this year. Eleven members, or approximately 10 percent, of that band were from STMS. The Nor Cal event took place at CSUC in Chico Jan. 18.
The STMS students selected to participate in this year’s honor bands are Mary Kurek, Lauren Engel, Kelsey McClurg, Hillary Santana, Alli Bratton, Tim Suglian, Caleb Brown, Patrice Bergsohn, Kyle Conroy, Courtney Berti, Kyle Psilopoulous, Bubba Romagnolo, Mark McCullough and Becca Kushner, Romagnolo and Berti were doubly honored by receiving scholarships to summer music camp. Experiences such as these honor bands can be life altering and will open more doors for these young musicians in the years to come.
