Tahoe Today: A near-death experience

Have you ever had a near-death experience? If so, I really would like to hear from you.

As a child growing up in Newark, N.J., I vividly recall one major near-death experience. So many years have passed, and yet I remember it so well. Why, I was only 8 years old and I remember having a high fever from the chicken pox. I fell into a deep sleep and the next thing I knew I saw a very bright light; I called it the light of knowledge. I recall I was trying to reach the light and yet every time I would run to the light it grew further and further away. I saw an open field and there was a rock on the ground that fascinated me so I ran to the rock. It was then the light surrounded me and the warmth of the light was engulfing I felt safe, I wanted to stay forever.

A universal voice spoke to me, “I must go back in my body for it was not my time to pass through the gates to Heaven.

Now, remember, I was only 8 years old when this happened. Shortly afterward I awoke and screamed for my mom, I told her what I had witnesse and she smiled and said “God just shed his light upon you. You have been blessed.” I smiled and fell back to sleep, yet in my heart while I slept I had hoped I would reach the light once more.

Well over a week had passed, my chicken pox was gone and my mother called me over, wanting to know everything I had witnessed on my adventure to the light. I told her all about the bright light once more.

My mother wanted to share her story with me and, until this very day, her story sends chills up my spine. Mom explained to me she had a lump in her breast and she was going to undergo a biopsy on her left breast. She wanted me to feel secure and told me if anything should happen to her I would be taken care of, not to worry. I recall this was in the early 1950s, when technology was not so advanced as it is now.

However, I was to young too understand, but she held me tight and told me that she loved me very much. A very long week passed while my mother was recovering from surgery. I remember her sitting on the couch as she was waiting for the results of her biopsy – God, it must have been grueling for her.

My mother wanted to share her near-death experience with me, what she told me stuck in my head as a child like no other words that have been uttered in my lifetime.

My mother spoke. “I know you will find this hard to believe, Dayle, but while I was in surgery, I was in a deep sleep. I saw grandma. She waved at me. I was so happy to see her. There was my father and other relatives, the tunnel was long and at the end of the tunnel there was a bright light. I was stopped.”

“My mom told me to go no further it wasn’t my time. I had to go back.

“No you must go back.” Grandma said. “Your daughter will do something in life that will change the world. This is important. You must go back and raise your child,” Grandma said.
