Tahoe Today: As Tahoe turns

Dayle Schear

Here we go again – the highs, the lows, the ups and the downs of Tahoe. Well, people, hang on, there is a new ride in town, and this ride will be connected to a money tree. Yup, I know you think I’m a bit off, especially those of you who read my column on a regular basis, but I feel this money tree in my bones. So, ask yourself as you read my column what is to come of our very special, unique town that our psychic sees. Well, let me tell you and, might I say, have a seat, sit down, cozy up and get a cup of coffee while you read on.

I am well aware of the recession that we are in, or coming out of, depending on which state you live in. However, Tahoe is unique and we have for many a year been adopted by the beautiful people of the Bay Area and the tale goes they are buying up a lot of property in the Bay, in fact they are over-bidding for property. I even checked with our neighbors in Sacramento; their inventory on housing is very low. You see, the people in Sacramento who have a home are keeping it, or refinancing. The short sales are on their way out, so what is really left is the choice to rent or buy. Rentals in many areas are going sky high, just because of the lack of inventory.

Now, you say, what does this all have to do with Tahoe? Everything. I wish you could see what I see through my eyes for the future of Tahoe in the next few years. It really is going to be marvelous.

Now, let’s take a real touchy subject, the new loop road that is proposed. It may take a while but, nevertheless, there is very little anyone can do. It’s going to happen. You see there are many very wealthy people who have drawn up plans for this project and they have a lot to benefit from it. Now, don’t shoot the messengers. I just am a human visionary, I see what I see; I have no firsthand knowledge of this event one way or another.

Now, take this summer. It will be a huge turning point, masses of people will emerge in the Lake Tahoe Basin, more so than usual; wall-to-wall people due to the extra new concerts. Entertainment, new restaurants and a lot more things to do this summer. Now the only thing that can destroy the Basin, in my vision, is that we have to watch the fire danger – other than that we are home free.

Back to the Bay Area people. Just in case you haven’t noticed, there is a huge amount of wealth pouring into Tahoe. The dot-com people are buying large properties for cash in the basin. We are talking about million-dollar homes for cash; the start-up families have found a home in Tahoe – they truly can have it all – seclusion, peace and serenity. They can work from home. Next they will add a lot of class to our town. More unique shops, culture – in fact, we will be the next on the list to be a small Bay Area suburbia.

Many people have asked me about “The Hole” on Highway 50, soon to be built either by a convention center or more time share units.

Keep reading my column to see the new changes as Tahoe turns.
