Tahoe Today: Remembering the Achille Lauro

Dayle Schear

It was October 1985, I caught myself dreaming of a ship out in the ocean. I was in the dream trying to escape while aboard a cruise ship. In my dream I tried so hard to get off the ship, but every path I took led me back to my cabin room. I heard shouting and raving and ranting in the hallway. I would peek out of the cabin door, trying to find my way out. It was only a dream. This dream went on for about one week; every night, the same dream. When I awoke, I told my husband about my dream. We just couldn’t make any sense of it until, one evening, we turned on the television and there was the ship of my dreams, The Achille Lauro.

Excerpts from my book The “Psychic Within:”

She was an Italian Cruise Ship, hijackers took over the ship. Gunshots were heard throughout. Gunmen charged in, spraying the dining room with bullets. Passengers headed for the floor. Four terrorists seized the ship. They had declared themselves part of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Their mission was to trade Americans and Jews for 50 PLO prisoners. When the terrorists realized they were getting nowhere, they decided to kill one of the passengers to show that they meant business. The terrorists collected all the passports. When they realized the Leon Klinghoffer was an American and a Jew; he was the first and only one to go. Klinghoffer sat in his wheelchair and became a patsy, a martyr. The terrorists wheeled Klinghoffer to the ship’s rail. One of the terrorists held his automatic rifle to the American’s head and opened fire. Passengers on board the ship were ordered to throw Klinghoffer overboard.

This would be the last time Marilyn Klinghoffer would see her husband. It was her 59th birthday. The cruise on the Achille Lauro was Marilyn’s birthday present. This would be the last cruise they would take together, for Marilyn had terminal cancer. Leon Klinghoffer was 69 years old. He had suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed.

The Egyptian airliner carrying the hijackers to freedom was intercepted by U.S. Navy Fighters and forced to land in Sicily. Government officials boarded the ship.

The hijackers were arrested before Marilyn returned to New York. She insisted on making a side trip to help identify the four men. There was a trial; the four men were convicted.

“A friend of the family commented Leon Klinghoffer was every man. He could have been you, and if terrorism is allowed to bloom, his fate could be the fate of everybody. Hence 911.”

It took me well more than 10 years and a trip back to New Jersey to find out through my cousin that Leon and Marilyn Klinghoffer were my first cousins.

An update from the Huffington Post on April 24:

Joran Van der sloot case being extradited to the US for extortion in the Natalee Holloway case.

“In 1985, Leon Klinghoffer, 69, and his wife were celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary on the cruise ship Achille Lauro. Palestinian terrorists hijacked the liner, and Klinghoffer was murdered and thrown overboard. The hijackers were later given safe passage on a flight to Tunisia, but the U.S. Air Force intercepted the plane and forced it to land in Italy, where the suspects were taken into custody.”

“The key to that is that the U.S. has jurisdiction over anybody, anywhere in the world, who kills or injures a U.S. citizen. It kind of originated with the Leon Klinghoffer case.”
