Tahoe views for the president

Patrick McCartney

The countdown to President Bill Clinton’s visit to Lake Tahoe this summer begins this week, with community forums scheduled for Lake Tahoe’s north and south shores.

Comments given at the forums will help define the agenda for the president’s Tahoe Summit, which is scheduled for July 26-27.

The forums are sponsored by the 12-member local steering committee for the presidential visit, as well as the Lake Tahoe Transportation and Water Quality Coalition. Scheduled are discussions on the three issues that will be center stage during the president’s visit: water quality, transportation and forest management.

Participants will also be asked to break into smaller groups to further analyze the topics.

Following the community forums will be three cabinet-level conferences in June and July addressing the principal issues to be addressed at the Tahoe Summit. The issue conferences, to be presided over by cabinet officers, are scheduled to be held on Lake Tahoe’s north and south shores, and in Reno.
