TDVA to study Sacramento coach service

by Sally J. Taylor

Can a luxury motor coach from the Sacramento region draw visitors to Stateline casinos? A survey commissioned by the Tahoe-Douglas Visitors Authority that will be released Wednesday could hold some answers.

Bryan Godbe of Godbe Research and Analysis will release the results of the survey during the TDVA Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Lakeside Inn and Casino.

The Sacramento region is one of the primary feeder markets to South Shore. In recent years, Indian casinos have diverted many gamblers who formerly came to Tahoe. The visitors authority is looking for ways to recapture that market.

In May, the board approved a $29,990 contract with Godbe to research the viability of a bus service to Sacramento similar to the Tahoe Casino Express, which operates to and from Reno/Tahoe International Airport.

The authority does not intend to operate the service but would provide the information to another entity, possibly the Lake Tahoe Gaming Alliance which owns the Tahoe Casino Express.

Godbe researchers asked approximately 850 people such questions as how often they gamble, where they gamble and their perception of the drive on U.S. Highway 50.

In other business, the board will discuss a joint air service marketing plan to promote scheduled air service to the Lake Tahoe Airport and will consider a funding agreement with the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority for marketing programs and special events projects during 1999-2000.
