Two local teachers were recently awarded grants from The California Retired Teachers Association, El Dorado County Division 3.

South Lake Tahoe High School teacher Nathan Crnich and South Lake Tahoe Middle School teacher Chelsea Garbarini each received a $400 award for supplemental materials to be used in their classrooms that would enrich and enhance their programs and classroom environments. They were selected from numerous applicants throughout El Dorado County.

Crnich will use the grant money for a new course he and another teacher, Cliff Smith, have developed and are implementing called “Geometry by Design.” According to Crnich, the grant would help students “open their eyes to the practicality of not only geometry, but all forms of mathematics.”

Garbarini will be purchasing materials and supplies which will help her meet the needs of her special-education students who often require instruction that is presented to reflect the “multitude of learning styles” in her classroom. Her goal is to “reach students that otherwise wouldn’t be able to be reached through traditional lecture based lessons.”

The CalRTA grant selection committee described both of the programs as unique and well deserving of the award. Dianne Rees, a local resident, retired teacher and business owner in South Lake Tahoe, presented the grants.
