Teen arrested in carjacking

A 16-year-old boy who walked away from a Rite of Passage youth camp was arrested in Oakland on Thursday afternoon driving a vehicle stolen in a Carson City carjacking Tuesday night.

The boy disappeared from custody Tuesday afternoon while in Carson City for a doctor’s visit. The camp is headquartered in Douglas County.

“From the description of the alleged carjacker we thought it might be the walk-away,” said Carson City Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Scott Burau. Investigators prepared a photo lineup for the victim, John Zimmerman.

“We showed the lineup to the victim and a positive ID was made,” Burau said.

The escapee was arrested when officers watching a home of an acquaintance in Oakland spotted the boy in the stolen vehicle.

“We were still in the process of getting a warrant when that was cut short by California authorities,” Burau said.

Burau said the teen will be extradited to face charges in the carjacking.
