South Lake Tahoe police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a series of thefts from mailboxes Wednesday morning.

An investigation is ongoing by the police department and the U.S. Postal Service. About 35 mailboxes were allegedly tampered with and, so far, more than 100 pieces of mail have been recovered, said South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Donna Kingman.

The man faces felony theft of mail charges, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Marty Hale.

The suspect allegedly went to mailboxes along Rainbow, Lapham, South Shore, Washington, Patricia and Hazel streets around 7 a.m., Kingman said.

Police learned about the thefts after an alert citizen discovered footprints that led from a mailbox to other mailboxes in the neighborhood, Kingman said. The citizen notified authorities after discovering a pattern of footprints in the snow that went from house to house.

Because the incident is under investigation, police haven’t released the name of the suspect.

Residents with mailboxes should pick up their mail as soon as it has been delivered, Kingman advises. Also, it is a good idea to take mail directly to the post office instead of leaving it in the mailbox for the postman to take, she added.
