Heavenly Ski Resort plans to construct $10 million in improvements before the 1998-99 ski season.

They include:

— Installation of a high-speed detachable quad on the Gunbarrel lift that can whisk skiers and snowboarders more than 1,700 vertical feet to the top of the resort’s “Face” in less than four minutes. The current triple chair covers the terrain in about 12 minutes.

— Installation of a high-speed detachable quad chair at Stagecoach on the Nevada side of the resort, which will cut riding time more than half from 13 minutes to six.

— The new 13,000-square-foot Sky Lodge will be constructed adjacent to the existing Sky Deck at mid-mountain on the California side. The new facility will feature mountain-themed architecture, 300 indoor seats and three new dining options.

— The resort’s Perfect Turn Children’s Center will be redesigned with the addition of a new state-of-the-art day-care facility for toddlers from six months to four years. Capacity of its children’s ski and snowboard instruction programs will be expanded.

— Snowmaking will be added to Cascade and 49er trails, both located off the Tamarack Express. That will expand snowmaking from 68 percent to 69 percent of the resort’s cleared trails.

— The California Rental Shop will be expanded to accommodate 20 percent more guests and get them onto the slopes faster.

— Grooming equipment additions include a new “winch” cat and pipe dragon.
