The time of year for a new calendar

William Ferchland, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Many people see beautiful girls in calenders. Many people see scenic Lake Tahoe calenders. In 2003, the two will be combined.

The calender, consisting of 18 to 26-year-old women, is a nonprofit project to raise money for the Miss Lake Tahoe Scholarship Foundation. All contestants in the Jan. 20 pageant will receive college scholarship money, said Renee Conway, executive director of the pageant.

The last leg of the year-and-a-half photo shoot was held at Nancy Blaney’s house in the Al Tahoe neighborhood. Fur coats and sequin shirts draped the couches that sat in front of a Hades-hot woodstove.

Justin Wright sat watching the scene. The amateur photographer in charge of the shoot watched as Kimberly Ahrens, 26, sifted through clothes.

“You want me next?” Ahrens, a graduate student living in Reno, asked. “In black leather?”

“Anybody can shoot 12 girls in a bikini, but we’re not doing that,” Wright said as Ahrens picked up the leather pants and a long sleeve black and white striped shirt.

Tim Hirota, the head photographer, waited as Shauna Rogers, 18, tried to find a pin that would replace the top button on her jean pants.

The Sacramento photographer said he enjoys working in South Lake Tahoe.

“It’s just a challenge getting up here,” he said. “We can’t beat the scenery and the light is beautiful.

“It’s a fun project. Who wouldn’t want to come to Tahoe and shoot beautiful girls in front of the lake?”

With a white meadow in front and the Sierra Mountains as a background, Hirota gave directions to the girls in calf-deep snow.

After Tiffany Ahrens, 21, finished her shoot, she stood with her back to the stove. She confessed her hatred for the cold and her wish to be the February girl, since it is her birthday month.

Rogers, who ran upstairs a couple of times to find the right pin for her pants, said she never expected having a winter calender shoot at her house. She didn’t mind either.

“It’s kind of fun, kind of exciting,” she said.

“It’s probably what every girl dreams about.”

The Miss Lake Tahoe beauty pageant will be held at the South Shore Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m.
