Whitney Myer passed the most pressure-packed audition imaginable.

The 25-year-old Reno singer was chosen by each of the four judges during the blind audition phase of “The Voice,” a weekly program which has ascended NBC to No. 1 in the Monday night television ratings.

“It was definitely the most nervous I’ve been in my whole life,” Myer told Lake Tahoe Action on Wednesday. “I felt like I was going to pass out going up the stairs. … Singing is not like playing guitar. If you’re nervous, your breathing is affected which means it really affects your singing. … Once I realized my voice wasn’t going to fail me, I just put it all out there and tried my hardest.”

Myer sang an Alicia Keys’ song, “No One,” and no one in the audience was siting down moments after she took the stage.

“Halfway through the first verse the crowd was jumping up screaming and clapping and that immediately made me feel better,” Myer said. “You kind of have the feeling if the crowd likes you maybe the judges will like you, too.”

During the show, judges Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton sit with their chairs turned away from the stage. After they choose an artist they want on their team, the chair turns toward the stage. Levine’s chair was the first to spin, but Myer didn’t know it.

“I was on the side of the stage not looking and my eyes were closed,” Myer said. “I was rocking out or something.”

After each of the four judges turned toward Myer, they lobbied her to be on their team. Aguilera said she was impressed Myer could sustain a strong performance through the entire song. Levine said Myer had the potential to win the entire competition.

Myer picked Levine, who is the front man for Maroon 5.

“He straddles more than one genre, which I feel I do too, so I thought we would be able to meet on that level,” said Myer, who describes her style as pop, soul and funk.

Each judge selects 12 singers. The competition next goes to the battle round, followed by public voting. The winner gets $100,000 and a deal with a record label.

A University of Nevada, Reno graduate with a degree in Spanish, Myer has written songs since she was 13 years old. The Whitney Myer Band will perform March 25 at the Crystal Bay Casino at the Galactic after-party. Myer’s band includes the lead singer’s father, Scott Myer, and uncle, Fred Myer, who were both televised backstage on Monday, and Gia Torscaso. Scott and Fred Myer were members of a Reno band, the Mudsharks.

Myer has been hounded by press and radio this week.

“My Twitter and Facebook is not even manageable right now,” she said.

Maroon 5 plays July 21 at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys. We wonder who might open that show? Hmmm.
