Thursday’s ski and snowboard report for Sierra-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood and Heavenly

Good morning. Here is the ski report today at South Shore’s closest ski resorts, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood Mountain Resort and Heavenly Mountain Resort. Bundle up, be kind to each other and pray for continued snow.

Sierra reports the morning chill. Overnight lows once again dipped down to the low teens. Temperatures at the base of the mountain this morning are 15 degrees and 13 at the summit. Winds remain calm. Sierra reminds skiers of the upcoming Christmas holiday festivities that begin on the Mountain Dec. 21. Santa will be on the slopes as well as his reindeer, music, snowmen and snowwomen docorating contests and more.

Kirkwood reports an early morning temperatures of 23 degrees, with calm winds and partly cloudy skies. Highs today are expected to reach 37. On its Web site this morning Kirkwood officials said it anticipates opening Chair 6 on Saturday as well as Timber Creek day lodge, Chairs 7 and 9.

The resort encourages skiers and boarders to get their season pass before prices increase on Monday.

Cross Country trails are open mid-week with 8 kilometers of machine groom track in the meadow plus 30 kilometers of snowshoe trails. The hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Skate Ski clinic will be held on Sunday. The clinic is open to all levels of skiers. Come and learn all about the new natural movements of skate skiing. The cost for the clinic is $30 ($10 equipmental rental). Call (209) 258-7248 for reservations or more information.

The measurements are in and Heavenly Mountain Resort reports there are 3 miles of skiable terrain available, thanks to last week’s storms and an emphasis on snow-making. Heavenly says it will have California Lodge opened by this weekend. Stay tuned.

There’s no word yet on its other mountain stations and lodges. But that may chanage soon. More snow may be headed to the Lake Tahoe region by this weekend. reporting, which means great news for skiers and boarders.

Today groomers have decided Dipper as the pick choice of the day. Tree skiing remains prohibited until further notice. Lifts open at 9 a.m.
