Thursday’s weather: Storm should taper to showers by this afternoon

A cold Pacific storm has brought heavy snow to the Lake Tahoe basin this morning. It should taper off into snow snowers by this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until 4 p.m. this afternoon with expected snow accumulations of 8 to 14 inches forecast at lake level and 14 to 28 inches above 7,000 feet.

Motorist will find travel to be difficult today around the Tahoe area with slick roads and poor visibilities due to heavy falling and blowing snow especially in the morning hours.

Daytime temperatures are projected to reach into the lower 30s today as a very cold air mass pushes into the area behind the cold front this afternoon. Clearing skies tonight and a fresh snow cover will allow low temperatures to drop to around zero to 5 above.

Skiers will find the best powder skiing on Friday with partly cloudy skies and light northeast winds. Friday will be the coldest day with highs reaching only the upper 20s to lower 30s around the lake.

A series of weaker upper disturbances could bring a chance of light snow showers or flurries to the area Saturday evening and again Christmas Eve.
