Timberwolves run like the wind

South Tahoe Middle School’s T.J. Zaccor and Justin Dalton won their second straight races and Kingsbury’s Kelsey Smith ran away with her first race at a Tah-Neva League meet last Friday at North Tahoe High School in Tahoe City.

Zaccor was 33 seconds faster than teammate Shelby McIntyre in winning the seventh-grade girls’ race in 13 minutes, 2 seconds. Dalton came from behind to best teammate Connor Yingling by 4 seconds with his winning time of 12:56 in the seventh-grade boys’ race.

The race offering the least suspense was Smith’s as she blistered the eighth-grade girls’ field with a time of 12:29.

“I was happy with how I did, but I think I could have gone faster,” Smith said. “I want to get near Nick (Schlager) and Richard (Shroy).”

Smith was referring to the top two eighth-grade boys’ runners from Carson Middle School. Schlager, who finished ninth in his age group at last year’s national championships, won in 11:26.

“She would have finished third in the eighth-grade boys’ race,” said Kingsbury coach Andrea King. “She’s a lot stronger this year than last year.”

Unlike last season, the eighth-grade boys and girls ran at different times.

With Dalton, Yingling, Brady Hiob and Andrew Contaxis logjammed at the top at 1-2-4-6, the STMS boys won their second straight meet. Kingsbury’s John Robinson and T.J. Kolesnik were, fifth and seventh, respectively, in 13:19 and 13:27.

Although unofficial, it was believed that STMS swept the other team titles as well.

“It’s an amazing group,” said STMS coach Karin Holmes. “It’s a lot of kids who like to run.”

The Timberwolves’ eighth-grade girls’ team placed five in the top 9 with Lindsey McCall leading the way with her third-place clocking of 14:16. Not far off McCall’s pace were Shelbi Spicer (fifth, 14:28), Cassandra Diaz (seventh, 15:00); Marina Palmieri (eighth, 15:02) and Ashley Killeen (ninth, 15:26).

STMS’s eighth-grade boys were led by Ben Sullivan (third, 12:48), Jordan Yingling (fifth, 12:51), Erich Baumann (seventh, 12:57) and Zildjian Barromeo (eighth, 12:58).

Joining STMS’s Zaccor and McIntyre in the top 10 were Shannon Colleton, third, 13:55; and Cassidy Cichowicz, 10th, 14:54. Kingsbury’s Sammy Rupp ran fifth in 14:17, leading three Knights in the top 15. Riana Cerceo was ninth in 14:37 and Kira Smith, Kelsey’s younger sister, was 13th in 15:32.

Three other Kingsbury runners cracked the top 15 in various races. Shannon Marshall was 12th in the eighth-grade girls’ race in 15:40, Adam Kingman was 13th for the eighth-grade boys’ in 13:21 and Cody Williams finished 13th at 14:02 in the seventh-grade boys’ division.

Despite declining enrollment, King is ecstatic that so many students turned out for her teams.

“We’re lucky to have (32) kids in a school of 150 …. that’s a good percentage of school who came out,” she said. “And we have a lot of young kids coming out, which is nice to see.”

Tah-Neva League racing returns to Incline Middle School on Friday. Races begin at 3 p.m.
