Today is deadline to register for California’s primary vote

California residents: Want to help choose your party’s presidential nominee?

Today’s your deadline to register.

Californians who have moved, want to change political parties or are first-time voters must complete a voter registration form and turn it into the El Dorado County Elections Office by 5 p.m. today to participate in the presidential primary election Feb. 5.

Voter registration forms are available in libraries, post offices and Department of Motor Vehicle offices.

The South Lake Tahoe Elections Office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. It is located at 3368 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite 108. Call (530) 573-3409.

According to figures compiled by the California Secretary of State’s Office, about 15.5 million Californians currently are registered to vote, comprising two-thirds of those eligible to vote in the state. An estimated 7.5 million Californians are eligible to vote but not registered.

The rules for participating in the presidential primary contest vary by party. California voters who wish to cast ballots in the Republican, Libertarian, Green or Peace and Freedom parties’ primaries must be registered to vote with those parties. The Democratic and American Independent parties will permit independent, “decline to state,” voters to participate in their primary elections.

Voters may check their registration status by contacting their county election office. A roster of the 58 county offices and the California Voter Foundation’s nonpartisan California Online Voter Guide are available on the Web at http://www.calvoter.org.
