An investigation into the death of a 14-month-old South Lake Tahoe child revealed the boy died of a viral infection.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, Tristan Lathrop died of viral myocarditis, which causes an inflammation of the middle muscular layer of the heart wall. Tristan died May 9.

Tristan was in the care of his aunt and her fiancee on May 9. A problem was first noticed when the couple arrived at the Supply One parking lot on U.S. Highway 50 in Meyers. When Lathrop’s aunt went to remove him from his car seat to take him into the store, she noticed he wasn’t breathing.

The toddler was rushed to Barton Memorial Hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him.

Sgt. Randy Peshon said finding an exact cause of death took some time because of the intricate tests that were needed. The final report came in earlier this month.

“According to the pathologist, Tristan probably wouldn’t have shown many symptoms of his illness,” Peshon said.
