Travel Systems may be sold

When the M.S. Dixie II and Tahoe Queen race on Labor Day next year, the Dixie may have a new owner in the wheelhouse.

Several prospective buyers have taken a look at Travel Systems Ltd., owner of the Dixie and operator of Zephyr Cove Resort. Rumor has it that a major company is in serious courtship discussions, rumors that company officials would not confirm.

“We’re being looked at,” Director of Marketing Bill Chernock said. “That’s all that’s appropriate to say at this point.

“It’s no secret that the company has been looked at several times by several people.”

Longtime Zephyr Cove residents Bob and Don Kimball are the majority owners of the company. Bob fills the president’s seat and Don serves as vice president and treasurer.

Travel Systems Ltd. was founded in 1973 as a tour operator, arranging transportation and activities for large groups.

In 1979, it received its first special use permit to operate at Zephyr Cove and purchased the first M.S. Dixie, moving it from the Timber Cove Marina to Zephyr Cove.

The company now has four divisions at Lake Tahoe: the M.S. Dixie II; the Zephyr Cove Resort – which includes the lodge, cabins and marina; the campground and stables; and the Zephyr Cove Snowmobile Center.

Travel Systems also operates Lake Mead Cruises as concessionaires of the National Parks Service.
