Tuesday’s weather: Cloudy today, approaching storm could bring heavy snow later this week

Tom Cylke

Look for cloudy skies with scattered rain showers today as a band of subtropical moisture passes across the area this morning. Snow levels are expected to be above 8,500 feet with any light snow accumulation above the mountain passes.

Daytime temperatures will remain unseasonably mild reaching into the mid 50s under cloudy skies and southwest winds around 10 to 20 mph. Overnight lows are forecast to dip into the upper 20s to mid 30s. Expect a little more sunshine and light winds on Wednesday with highs topping out in the lower 50s around the lake.

Computer forecast models are projecting a low pressure system to track into central California late Thursday and into central Nevada on Friday. If this storm system maintains its forecast path and intensity, heavy snow would be likely in the Lake Tahoe area beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing through Friday.

Current forecast precipitation amounts of between 1 and 3 inches water equivalent or 1 to 3 feet of snow accumulation in the central Sierra from Lake Tahoe to Mammoth Lakes by Friday night. Stay tuned for the latest updates on this developing storm system and its impact on travel.
