Two arrested for traveler’s check fraud

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Lake Tahoe police arrested two people Friday evening after they allegedly purchased merchandise with forged traveler’s checks at three South Shore businesses.

In each instance, the pair presented a fake $500 American Express check to pay for merchandise and receive cash in change, according to a statement from police.

Olewasami Brown, 35, and Annette Powell, 35, both from the Bay Area, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and forgery after a clerk at a fourth store became suspicious and called police.

The clerk recorded the license plate number and description of the pair’s vehicle. While law enforcement officers searched for the vehicle, several business owners called police and reported the vehicle was in the Ski Run Boulevard area.

At 6:20 p.m., an El Dorado County deputy located the vehicle parked at a hotel on Ski Run Boulevard, where police discovered Brown and Powell had rented a room.

Police booked Brown and Powell into the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe Thursday afternoon. They remained in custody Monday morning. It is unknown if either has an attorney.

Police ask people with questions about the case or with additional information about the incident to contact Officer Matt Morrison at 530-542-6100.
