Uber adds service for Lake Tahoe-Truckee skiers, riders
OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. — Catching a ride to the slopes just got even more convenient for skiers and snowboarders at Lake Tahoe.
On the heels of launching its ridesharing service on both sides of Tahoe, Uber announced its new UberSKI service is now available to customers in the Tahoe region, officially launching Saturday, March 5.
The Tahoe market is only the third in the nation to receive the ridesharing option catered to skiers and snowboarders. UberSKI launched in Salt Lake City in December and a month later revved up in neighboring Reno.
“It’s done really well in other cities, so we’re really excited to bring it to Tahoe,” said Zara Rahim, an Uber spokeswoman.
For an additional $5 base to their fare, UberSKI gives customers the option to request an UberX car — the low-cost vehicle option — with an all-wheel drive and a ski rack for transporting skis and snowboards.
For a cost example, an estimated fare from Squaw Valley to Truckee is $37 with UberSKI, according to the company.
All UberSKI drivers are trained on how to use the ski rack and handle ski and snowboard equipment, Rahim said.
The launch of UberSKI in the area comes two months after Uber initiated its ridesharing service in Tahoe. The company was able to move forward with offering services on both the north and south shores in December after getting the green light to operate in Nevada as a Transportation Network Company (TNC). Uber has been regulated to run in California since 2013.
“We thought what better way to kick off Uber in the area then to also launch UberSKI,” Rahim said. “With the appeal of getting around in those resort areas easily and efficiently, we just thought it just made sense to add that product availability there, too.”
