Update 5:55 p.m.: Fires on Pioneer Trail unfounded; officials say low clouds may have confused callers

Staff report

Firefighters who responded to two possible lightning strike fires along Pioneer Trail said that they didn’t find any ingnition and think possibly low clouds confused those who initially reported it.

The Forest Service, however, was said to be responding to the area of Armstrong Pass, where there was a report of a lightning fire. The status of that fire is unknown.

Several lightning strikes were visible this afternoon. Rain remains steady in South Lake Tahoe as of about 5:55 this evening.
