UPDATE: Missing snowboarder found safe
Updated 10:06 a.m. —A Gardnerville man being sought by Douglas County searchers was found safe after he apparently spent the night at the Stagecoach Lodge.Douglas County Search & Rescue spent the night looking for a snowboarder whose vehicle was found in the parking lot of Heavenly on Wednesday.Corey Hoffman, 24, and his brother were snowboarding on Wednesday when they became separated on their last run down the mountain.Searchers tracked his cell phone and found it in the vehicle.Douglas County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County Search and Rescue and Heavenly Ski Patrol have looked for Hoffman through the night despite snow, wind, and avalanche danger. — This is an update to a previous story. The original story is found below. —Searchers are looking for an overdue Gardnerville snowboarder at Heavenly Ski Resort in Stateline.Corey Hoffman, 24, and his brother were snowboarding at Heavenly on Wednesday when they became separated on their last run down the mountain.Hoffman’s vehicle was found in the parking lot at the resort, and he has not been in contact with family and friends, Undersheriff Paul Howell said Thursday. His cell phone was tracked to his vehicle.Searchers were called out on Wednesday night and have been looking for him through the night.Howell said searchers believe that Hoffman is still on the mountain.He is dressed in black snow pants, a black sweatshirt, and brown hat with fur trim and black boots. He is wearing an orange Camelback pack and has a red snowboard.Douglas County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County SAR and Heavenly Ski Patrol have searched throughout the night. Their efforts have been hampered by snow, wind, and avalanche danger.Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is calling in additional resources from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Tahoe Nordic. Douglas SAR is also working with the State of Nevada Emergency Management to arrange air search assets. As of this time there is tentative arrangement for a Navy search helicopter from NAS Fallon to join the search.Howell said today’s search efforts will concentrate on the Mott Canyon and Daggett Creek drainages on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the in-bound ski areas in the vicinity of the Stagecoach Lodge. It is reported that Corey was boarding in and out of bounds Wednesday, so the search efforts will include both in and out of bound areas.
