Van loaded with prescription drugs stolen

A van containing more than $10,000 in prescription drugs was taken by two men who ended up rolling the vehicle on its side, according to officers.

The van, owned by UCI Distributors in Sparks, was parked at the Crescent V Raley’s Supermarket on Friday afternoon when Eric Griffin and John Barackman stole the vehicle, said California Highway Patrol Officer Sherry Reehl.

The van’s driver called authorities and reported the theft while admitting the keys were under a floor mat, Reehl said. Minutes later, CHP Officer Tim Breza found the van resting on its passenger side on Sawmill Road. Slick roads and driving too fast for the conditions led to the rollover, officers said.

Both Griffin, 23, and passenger Barackman, 19, toyed with the idea of running after crawling out of the driver’s window but halted when Breza told them to stop, Reehl said. No home towns were available for the two.

The Ford van received moderate damage. Griffin and Barackman were arrested on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and grand theft and booked into El Dorado County Jail on $50,000 bail.
